STREET STYLE ANALYSIS

Upper Street, Islington

Upper Street is the principal commercial street in the Islington district. There are mostly fashion boutiques, pubs, restaurants and theatres. It is located in the Islington area in London. Islington is approximately at 2 miles from the City of London and it is close to Camden. According to ONS, United Kingdom, the United States Census Bureau, the population was 239,142 in 2018. The district was created in 1965 by combining the previous areas of Islington and Finsbury.

Upper Street is a place where a multitude of people and cultures live together. Our intention was to observe and analyze the various styles and to understand the key trends of the 19/20 winter season. We posed five questions to people in the street. We asked them where do you shop? Which brands? What colors do you usually wear in winter? What is the most important item that you wear during winter? Describe the perfect outfit for the winter season. The questions were intended to be brief and clear, in order to create an informal survey for people rather than an interview.

This participant responded that he usually shopped on Upper Street and central London to vintage stores. His winter colours were black and red. The most important item for him was a long coat and the perfect outfit would be a turtleneck jumper with a long coat and boots..
This is one other participant. He said that he shopped mostly on Upper Street and his stores were mainly Jigsaw and online shops. His winter colours were blue and grey. The important articles for him were a scarf and blue clothes. The perfect outfit would be a nice brown checked suit with a large brown faux fur coat and brown suit shoes.
We also talked to these two women because their style was very distinctive. They said they shopped at charity shops. Their colours would be red and black. The most important item for them was sunglasses and the perfect outfit would be some warm, tailored and casual items with a long coat.

We questioned a few other people, but they refused to be photographed. However, the product that came out several times was the long coat.

This work revealed that trends do not necessarily correspond to those  from magazines. Trends are individual. Observing people on the street is the key to identify a possible future trend.
